Pilgrimage
& Initiation Journeys to Nepal
| |
|
A
sacred journey to Nepal for deep immersion into the culture,
spirituality, and healing practices of Tibetan, Tamang, and
other tribal shamans.
Shamanism in Nepal is mainstream. It exists alongside medicine
as a viable healing system. Shamans are consulted by kings,
priests, and laymen alike for healing, divination and as intermediaries
with the spirits.
The ancient wisdom tradition of Tibetan and Nepalese shamans
is passed on through pilgrimage type full-moon initiations
in which master shamans, like those with whom we work, transmit
power (sakti) for the healing of self and the prosperity of
the community.
A key feature is a pilgrimage to a sacred shrine in the Nepal
Himalayas outside Kathmandu, for shamanic initiation and empowerment.
Participants receive teachings, healings, and initiation from
Aama Bombo (Mother Shaman), a famous healer who embodies Kali
and treats as many as 50 patients a day, often conducting
dramatic healing rituals long into the night. The group will
have the opportunity to observe and participate in these rituals.
They will also meet and learn from other Tibetan and Nepalese
shamans, Buddhist lamas, Hindu sadhus, shamans, and cultural
experts, as well as visit the major residences of the deities
(shrines).
Nepal is located at the rooftop of the world, between the
powerful spiritual cultures of Tibet (Buddhist) and India
(Hindu). Our work is conducted in and around the Kathmandu
Valley (elevation 4,500) up to a height of 8,500
beneath the breathtaking panorama of the giant Himalayas.
Participants will sit in circle with master shamans from a
culture globally and spiritually at the farthest corner of
the world. Experienced assistants/interpreters facilitate
language, the understanding of culture, custom, myth, ritual,
and heart-to-heart conversation with shamans. |

NAGARKOT INITIATION
NEPAL SHAMANIC EXPEDITION AND INITIATION
SPRING 2008
Led by Larry Peters, PhD &
Sarah Dole
3 WEEKS OF CULTURAL AND SHAMANIC IMMERSION
Our Group will receive training and initiation from Aama Bombo (Mother Shaman) in the shamanic healing arts, including divination, depossession, and soul retrieval. Aama Bombo is a Master Shaman in the Tamang (Tibetan ethnic group) tradition, and is recognized in her community of Boudha (6 miles from Kathmandu) and throughout Nepal. She treats 50+ persons each day. Farmers, laborers, monks, lamas, and Nepalese royalty, both children and adults, consult Aama in her ritual room each morning for healings and any number of spiritual issues.
Most recently, Aama was inducted into in the Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers organized by the Center for Sacred Studies. Here she worked with women from every continent, each a repository of the oral traditions from their respective cultures, sharing ideas for ecological and social programs that give voice to their ancient shamanic wisdoms.
Our group will receive initiation in a traditional full moon ceremony led by Aama at a shrine sacred to shamans, Hindus and Buddhists alike. The initiation will be observed in its ancient form, and the group will dress in traditional costume of peacock feather headdress, bells, and malas; and drum and dance to honor Shiva, receive his sakti (power) in order to heal the community, before we complete the ritual and return to Aama’s home in Boudhanath and perform shamanic healings. On the eve of the full moon (1 April) we will make a steep climb to the Buddhist shrine at Jamacho above Swayambu Temple (known as Monkey Temple). It was here that the first of all human Buddhas, Bipuswi, sowed the seeds that later blossomed into the thousand-petalled lotus of the rainbow lights of the 5 great Meditation Buddhas who reside at Swayambu.
On the day of the full moon, we will have our initiation at Nagargot, a holy shrine to Shiva where numerous shaman gurus bring their students for initiation at this time of the year. We will go in full costume with our drums and perform a shaman’s dance.
In addition to the full moon initiation, the group will fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Nepal’s beautiful resort city. Here the group will learn healing methods of the Tibetan shamans who reside at the refugee camp at Tashi Pakhel. Chief among these is the noted elder, Pau Wang Chuk, recognized by the Foundation for Shamanic Studies as a “LivingTreasure”

A FEW NOTES REGARDING THE SCHEDULE: There is political turmoil in Nepal. It is safe for tourists in general and particularly safe in the Kathmandu and Pokhara Valleys where our group will be traveling. However, there may be a day or two when there is a transportation strike. On these days we will travel on foot and therefore be somewhat restricted. Thus we may need to rearrange the schedule to include all that is possible. Further, this schedule is not physically difficult. There’s a lot of walking but no mountain climbing. We will have an air-conditioned bus at our disposal and our accommodations are first class. Most of our work is early morning and late afternoons are free. Each evening we will meet in circle to hear the sacred stories and do spiritual work. All activities are optional.
